Helping Individuals, couples and families achieve Victory in and through Relationships.
Who am I? I am first and foremost a Princess, not by birth, but by adoption into The Royal Family - my crown is waiting for me in Heaven. But while I am still on earth, I am a wife to a loving and caring husband and mother to two beautiful girls. I am also a daughter, sister, aunt, cousin and friend.
I love family, and this is where my passion lies – no matter how “crazy” or messy!! There is no such thing as a perfect life or a perfect family; My life and family is by no means perfect, but we are happy, even though we might drive each other crazy sometimes! We also experience challenges – life gets real and we are constantly aware of how much we need each other in all areas of our lives. It doesn’t mean we’ve got it all figured out – we still make mistakes every day, believe me!
I qualified as a Registered Counsellor and am registered with the Health Professions Council of South Africa (HPCSA), after finishing my psychology (BPsych) degree at Stellenbosch University in 2003. I have been working full-time since 2004, starting as a Drug and Alcohol Counsellor at SANCA in Bellville for 3 years. In 2007, I became an Employee Assistance Program (EAP) practitioner at INCON Health in Durbanville, providing counselling to employees at their workplace, travelling all over the Western Cape. After 10 ½ years of working at INCON Health, I finally worked up the courage in 2017 to start my life-long dream of having my own Private Practice in Brackenfell, focusing on my passion, purpose and calling of working with couples and families.
In 2022, I celebrated 5 years of having a successful and well established Private Practice – which is all just pure unmerited favor and grace!
I am also a certified Parent Effectiveness Training (P.E.T.) Instructor, affiliated with Gordon Training International and Parent and Educational Training South Africa. This is the most proven parenting method in the world created by award-winning psychologist and three-time Nobel Peace Prize Nominee, Dr. Thomas Gordon.
Parent Effectiveness Training (P.E.T.) is an intensive 8-week group parenting workshop for parents of children all ages. You will learn practical communication skills that help you become compassionate without being permissive and assertive without resorting to punishment and reward.
What You Will Learn
I will always sign a contract with my clients before we start, so that they are fully informed of the process and are able to give consent before starting the sessions.
With respect for each other and our differences, we can go a long way.
I believe that we are all uniquely made, each one of us with a specific purpose. But what I believe, is not necessarily what you believe. What I do expect in my counselling session, is that we will not judge each other, just because we think or believe differently. Every opinion matters and every person, big or small, deserves an opportunity to be heard, without being judged.
It is not my responsibility to save you, or to change your circumstances… It is my responsibility to guide you and to give you options and tools to use in order to “save yourself”. You will remain the main person responsible for your own change.
"Mimi worked with me for the past 3 years, while I was tackling some personal issues. She was a great resource in helping me put the past in the past, and facing my present issues head on. She never made you feel like you are dealing with a therapist. Her warmth and kindness allows you to relax and feel comfortable while expressing your feelings. She genuinely cares and takes time to bring you to a comfortable level."
"In 'n baie moeilike tyd van my lewe, het Mimi 'n pad met my begin stap en was sy vir my 'n steunpilaar en skouer om op te leun deur baie van die lewe se op en af tye. Sy is 'n opregte mens met 'n omgee-hart wat altyd sal luister en met 'n wyse antwoord sal opkom. Haar leiding deur baie areas van my lewe, hetsy werk, liefde, finansies en hartseer, was “spot-on”. Sy het gevoel soos 'n vriendin wat altyd verstaan en my belange op die hart dra – en altyd baie professioneel."
"Gedurende 'n tyd in my lewe wat ek met kanker gediagnoseer was en deur erge familiekrisisse gegaan het, het ek om hulp aangeklop by Mimi. Sy was ongelooflik. Sy het na my geluister en het my weer rigting in my lewe gegee. Haar raad en voorstelle het my lewe verander. Sy het my weer perspektief gegee. Vandag is ek 'n mens wat deur nuwe oë na die lewe en sy beproewings kyk, danksy Mimi."
"What an awesome experience, just to re affirm. YOU ARE NEVER TOO OLD TO LEARN. I have three very young children, and I would not have been able to cope on my own. Mimi Hewett and the PET has helped me grow in my relationship with my husband of 46 years, my children born out of our marriage, and our Three adopted children. My life in general has been enriched, with communication skills provided by PET."
"Mimi is an amazing, experienced and truly helpful counsellor. I have only had the best of experiences with her as a counsellor in a time I needed counselling. She is trustworthy and her insights helped me to work through and process things I couldn't by myself."
"Soft spoken and kind hearted. Mimi has true empathy for her clients yet so objective. Ability to 'read' what clients are too afraid to verbalize. Dankie Mimi vir wat jy vir ons gedoen het!!!!"
"Mimi is a wonderful counsellor! She is genuinely caring and compassionate and treats you with so much kindness and respect that it makes it very easy to open up and deal with your problems. She helped me through one of the darkest periods of my life, and today I am thriving and very happy, all thanks to the changes I made with Mimi's guidance and support."
I was fortunate to be invited by SABC 3's Expresso Show, to talk about some Parenting issues - please have a look!
In-person or online counselling available to Adults and Teenagers(12 years and older)
Sessions are booked in advance. Unfortunately I cannot see unscheduled walk-ins or emergency appointments.
I prefer that appointments be scheduled via email or whatsapp, as I am often unable to answer my phone due to being in consultations.
Hours available for appointments:
Unfortunately no home visits, but I would be available for possible individual counselling and/or group trauma debriefings or life skills training at companies, on-site, if arranged ahead of time – additional travelling costs per kilometer will apply. Please contact me for a formal quotation.
Sessions will normally be 51-60 minutes or 81-90 minutes, depending on availability and need - fees will be charged according to the length of each session. I am registered with The Board of Healthcare Funders of South Africa (BHF p/n 0724718 ) and recognized by most medical aids. I do, however, request that clients pay cash (Credit/Debit card facilities are available) before or directly after each session. I will provide clients with a statement in order for them to claim back the money from their medical aids themselves.
Appointments missed without prior notice or cancelled less than 24 hours before the time of the scheduled appointment may be charged at full rate, should I be unable to fill the time-slot with another client. Please just note that medical aids generally refuse to pay for missed appointments and that you might have to pay for those sessions yourself, even though you have medical aid funds available.
